Go sailing on Lake Dillon! This lake seems to be one of the great secrets of life in Summit County! You can go out after work, any day of the week, and have the lake almost to yourself. On the weekends, there are regattas running Saturdays and Sundays, through the Dillon Yacht Club. There are many, many nice, nice people who race all summer long. Sailing on Lake Dillon is like sailing into a postcard. Deep blue skies, crisp mountain wind over the snowmelt and spring fed lake, views of the snow-capped peaks in the distance. . . it's truly magnificent!
The sailing can be a little tricky here. The wind is always shifting. And it can come up with ferocity! You've got to watch the water. And never cleat the main sheet! The wind can come up in the blink of an eye! The water doesn't get choppy with a lot of wave action. It's not a large enough lake that there's room for that. So for sailing scows, whoa! big fun! cold, but big fun. The most popular fleet is the J24 fleet. I used to race with them. I raced every weekend for years and years, mostly with the Ensign fleet. Then the Capri, then the J24. Nowadays there doesn't seem to be time for it. I'm so busy with . . . life I guess. Still love it though. And it's lead me to sailing in other places. Like the Sir Frances Drake Channel, Lake Michigan, Lake Travis, Narraganset Bay, San Diego Bay, and others. I do love sailing. And, you'll love sailing on Lake Dillon, too!
